Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons Low Gravity To begin with, asteroids are often much smaller than planets, so they have lower gravity.
Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss asteroids, a kind of huge space object made from rock and ice. We can find a large amount of them in our solar system. The article states that sending humans to an asteroid would be a great idea for colonization and mentions three ideas about that. However, the professor disagrees with these ideas.
First, the article states that the asteroids are smaller than other planets so they also have lower gravity, and spacecraft can take off easier. In contrast, the professor mentions that low gravity is harmful to the human body and makes curios health problems. The low gravity decreases the muscles and bones density so it has a negative effect.
Second, the reading passage claims that some asteroids have plentiful metal sources that are scarce on earth such as platinum and gold. The colonists can mine minerals and send them to earth. However, the professor disagrees with this idea and he states that the cost of support colony is high and there is no guarantee the metals supplies be profitable, it might be the sending these materials to the earth be cost full.
Finally, the reading mentions that most of the asteroids get closer to earth than the moon so getting to asteroids and going back from there is easy, for example, a trip to Mars requires much more time close to two years. The professor refutes this idea by saying that returns from asteroids also take time. The asteroids move away and traveling there and going back is challenging.
