As early as the twelfth century A.D., the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American Southwest were notable for their "great houses," massive stone buildings that contain hundreds of rooms and often stand three or four stories high. Archaeologists have been trying to determine how the buildings were used. While there is still no universally agreed upon explanation, there are three competing theories.

One theory holds that the Chaco structures were purely residential, with each housing hundreds of people. Supporters of this theory have interpreted Chaco great houses as earlier versions of the architecture seen in more recent Southwest societies. In particular, the Chaco houses appear strikingly similar to the large, well-known "apartment buildings" at Taos, New Mexico, in which many people have been living for centuries.

A second theory contends that the Chaco structures were used to store food supplies. One of the main crops of the Chaco people was grain maize, which could be stored for long periods of time without spoiling and could serve as a long-lasting supply of food. The supplies of maize had to be stored somewhere, and the size of the great houses would make them very suitable for the purpose.

A third theory proposes that houses were used as ceremonial centers. Close to one house, called Pueblo Alto, archaeologists identified an enormous mound formed by a pile of old material. Excavations of the mound revealed deposits containing a surprisingly large number of broken pots. This finding has been interpreted as evidence that people gathered at Pueblo Alto for special ceremonies. At the ceremonies, they ate festive meals and then discarded the pots in which the meals had been prepared or served. Such ceremonies have been documented for other Native American cultures.

Recently, there has been a ton of debate as to determine the usage of big houses of Chaco Canyon in New mexico in the American Southwest. More specifically, in regards to the passages, the writer puts forth the idea by giving three theories for the houses. In the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out there are some serious flaws in the writer’s claims. In fact, the professor believes all theories were lacking evidence and not truly accurate, and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states that Choco structures were residential and supported his argument by striking the similar feature of large houses with Taos's apartment which were lived by centuries by people. Some professionals in the same field, however, stand in firm opposition to this claim. In the listening, for example, the professor states may be outside feature of houses looks like residential but primary function of house doesn't hold the statement. He goes on to say that only 10 fire places were found which can be used for cooking and it was believed that 100 of families were lived.
One group of scholars, represented second theory by the writer, thinks that houses at Chaco were used for storage of grain maize due to its big size. Of course, though, not all experts in this field believe this is accurate. Again, the speaker specifically addresses this point when he states that there are many traces of maize but there is no remains for the containers used for the storage.
Finally, the author wraps his argument by positing the final theory that houses were used as ceremonial centers, stating the evidence to remaining found of broken pots which were used for cooking food for large gatherings. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that there are other materials found like sand, stone and other construction site materials which were thrown away. He believes that pots were used by construction people for cooking food.
To sum up, both the writer and professor hold conflicting views about houses of Chaco. It's clear that they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.
