ethanol vs gasoline
Both the reading passage and the recording discuss the potential of ethanol as a replacement for gasoline. While the reading claims that ethanol is not a good replacement, the lecturer thinks the opposite.
To begin with, the reading passage states that Ethanol can not reduce global warming compared to gasoline. However, the professor says that it definitely can. He mentions the fact that to produce ethanol, many plants are grown and because they absorb Carbon dioxide, they could help remove this greenhouse gas from the atmosphere.
Second, the writer states that if ethanol is used commonly, there will be less plants for animals to eat. Nevertheless, the professor challenges that point by saying that ethanol can be produced by using cellulose from other plants which are not eaten by animals. Therefore, in his view, the increase in ethanol production is not necessarily related to the decline in animals' food.
Finally, to contradict the claim in the reading that ethanol will be more expensive than gasoline without the tax support from the government, the lecturer contends that it is not likely true. He says that ethanol will be an economical choice in the future, eventhough there will be no tax support. He claims that the more ethanol users, the cheaper the price will be. He even provides a prediction that shows when the number of ethanol users increase three times, the ethanol price will decrease 40%.
That is how the professor believes the points in the reading passage are unconvincing.
