Professors' appearances on television
The lecturer states that when a professor appears on thte television, there aren’t as many benefits as one could think, neither to the professor sim/herself, nor to the community.
The first point the lecturer makes is that the professors are not likely to gain importance as scholars, like the passage defends. On the contrary, the professors that go to television shows will probably be seen more as entertainers than as educators. Therefore, they will be less likely to get invited to important conferences in their field of stufy, and it may become more difficult for them to raise funds in order to support some research.
Moreover, the lecturer also says that these television appearances will not be good for the public in general, as the passage claims they will. She states when the public watches television, people are not seeking for intelectual substance in the shows, therefore the producers will not allow the professors there to make deep analyzys in a particular subject. They will be allowed to present a brief introduction of what they want to share with the public, something that any reporter would be able to do with some research.
In other words, the lecturer disagrees with the points made in the passage, refering to the professors’ appearance on the television as something that could damage their reputation and not bring any knowledge to the general public.
