Essay topics:

Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific methods proposed in the reading passage.

The reading passage and professor both discusses whether the humpback whales use stars for navigation. They give opposite opinions about this.

First, the passage contends that the intelligence of humpback whales give them opportunity to navigate by star because of their advanced cognitive ability. However, the professor doesn't believe there is a relation between intelligence and ability to navigate. Take the ducks, one of the birds, for example, their cognitive ability is quite average among animals but they can in fact navigate by stars, which shows that the duck is born with such a ability and has nothing to do with the intelligence of them.

Second, the author mentions a phenomenon on humpback whales, migrating in straight line, which shows that they must be oriented by some external objects, such as stars. Nevertheless, the professor mentions that the humpback whales have a greater possibility to navigate by using magnetic field rather than stars. Their brain contains the bio-magnetite, which can obviously be used to sense earth magnetic field. That should be the real reason for the phenomenon.

Furthermore, the articles points out the humpback whales also have another weird behavior, spy-hopping, which is quite rare among marine animals. Some people propose that they may look up for stars by doing this. The professor concedes that this behavior is very rare among marine animals. The other animals that own this behavior is sharks, however, they look for their prey in the sky by using this. Also, the humpback whales usually do this in the sky instead of night and no stars present in the sky at daytime, obviously.
