TPO-01 - Integrated Writing Task In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiri

The reading supports a new initiative to implement a four-day week instead of five with some argumentation. The lecturer raises some concerns on validity of those arguments and gives some contra-arguments which seem to be pretty convincing.

Firstly, reading states that some of employees are willing themselves to work a four-days week for lesser compensation gaining for such shorter week about 80% of their current salary. Reading states that following of this approach will benefit the companies with the costs savings on the salary of those employees and will give to people the flexibility which they demand.
Lecturer debates the fact that companies would be able to save in such case, furthermore he proves that it potentially will lead to the costs increase taking into account the following:
- companies still will have to carry full social costs on employees who will work less number of days;
- the recruitment of new workers tied up with costs for training and for working seats arrangements as more work seats means more space and higher rentals, more personal computers and expansion of all related infrastructure.

Secondly, the reading states that more jobs will become available because a lot of employees will vacate one working day a week which may be taken by someone else. But lecturer highlighted two other possibilities of development in such situation, which are the following:
- instead of recruiting new workers, to prevent themselves from extra costs with which new recruitments are followed, company can ask remaining employees to work extra hours. In such case the improvement in a life quality of one type of employees will be achieved worsening the quality for another type, and that potentially may lead to loose of social stability in the society.
- companies may raise expectations from those who selected four-days weeks and make them work extra in these four days. In such case the potential improvement in quality of job mentioned in the reading would be not possible to achieve, and risks of taking a mistakes during much longer working day gets even hire than it is in original case.
And further more, people who select four days week will carry the risk to loose job at first place in case of any organizational changes, and they also receive much less opportunities for promotion.

Lecturer concluded that taking into account all these possible options, how companies may behave in such situation to protect themselves from increase of the costs, this new initiative may end up reducing quality of life, not increasing.
