TPO 19 - Many consumers ignore commercial advertisement. In response, advertising companies have started using a new tactic, called “buzzing”. The advertisers hire people-buzzers-who personally promote (buzz) product to people they know or meet. The key part is that the buzzers do not reveal that they are being paid to promote anything. They have as though they were just spontaneously praising a product during normal conversation. Buzzing has generated a lot of controversy, and many critics would like to see it banned.
The lecturer and the reading are both about a new advertising tactic called buzzing which hires people to buzz or promote products. The main point of this method is that buzzers do not reveal that they are being paid to promote things. The author of the reading provides three reasons to negate this approach. However, the man who is a buzzer argues those ideas because he believes they are misleading.
First of all, it is suggested in the passage that clients should be informed that they are hearing information from a buzzer as it makes a big difference in their decisions. Besides, the article notes that customers may hear incorrect information about the products. Nonetheless, it is challenged by the man. His position is that buzzers are actual consumers of those products and think the products are good. Therefore, they are telling the truth to other people.
Secondly, the writer contends that when people listen to a buzzer, they may be less critical and easily accept claims they would be suspicious of. In contrast, the man disproves this statement by saying that people always ask buzzers a variety of questions regarding the products like price and quality before deciding to buy the items.
Thirdly, the reading mentions that buzzing provokes a negative impact on social relationships as people will be less trustful of people in general when they are aware that they may talk to buzzers. The man, on the other hand, rebuts this claim. He puts forth the idea that the manufacturers cannot hire buzzers if their products are bad. He also states that buzzers have had good experience with the products which means they do not tell a lie. As a result, buzzing does not do harm to social relationships.
