The reading and lecture are both about genetic modified trees, which are improved trees to grow faster and yield more food and fruit. The author of the reading believes that there are some benefits in these types of trees but they are not as great as it sounds. She is of the opinion that the problems and costs associated with modified trees are substantial.
First of all, the author suggests that the modified trees are stronger than natural trees to survive in adverse conditions. It is mentioned that they are more resistant to climate conditions and insects. The argument is challenged by the lecturer. She says that even if non modified trees get killed by poor climate or insects a few of them would survive which would ensure the survival of the natural trees of the region. Furthermore, she argues that every modified tree would die due to the climate conditions and insects and none of them would survive.
Secondly, the writer contends that genetically modified trees will bring more economic benefits to the trees farmers by the rapid growth of the trees. The article notes that these kinds of trees would yield more fruit and food. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that the seed of modified trees would cost more for the farmers to purchase from the company that produces them. She elaborates on this by mentioning that the farmer has to pay the company even every time they want to plant the seeds of the genetic modified trees.
Finally, it is stated in the article that it can prevent the cutting down of the wild trees. The author establishes that due to the fast growth of the modified trees which can be used as timbers. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the fast-growing modified trees would damage the wild trees by outcompeting them in resources.
