TPO 31

Both the reading and the lecture are talking about the fossil of a kind of dinosaur found in China. Some paleontologists believe that this dinosaur had feathers. But, the author of the passage contradicts this idea and gives three explanations to approve the idea. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes three explanations made by the author.

First, the author of the reading says that the delicate lines made in the fossil possibly created after the animal's death. The article mentions that these fossil lines were the effect of the decayed of the animal skin and transformed into the fiber. In contrast, the professor says it is not likely to decomposition happened at the site. He argues that other fossils from other animals found on the same site have no evidence of the decomposition. He points out that the well-preserved fossil in the volcanic ash clearly indicates that is no decomposition happened.

Second, the reading states that scientists cannot clearly indicate that this fossil belongs to which part of the animal's body. Therefore, it is likely that these lines are the cause of frills than feathers. On the other hand, the professor declares that there are important chemical differences between feathers and frills. Moreover, with the fulfilled analysis, she claims that the chemical substances show that these lines are feathers, no-frills.

Third, the passage demonstrates that the feathers use for flying and regulating body temperature in animals. Hence, the location of the feather in this dinosaur indicates that these functions cannot be done with the feathers. The lecturer, on the other hand, claims that there are other functions that animals use the feather. She gives an example of a specific bird that has colorful feathers that use to attracts mates. As a result of the colorful feathers of this dinosaur, she asserts that these feathers used for display function.
