Both the reading and the lecture discuss that modern architecture has made problem for birds. In the reading section, the writer contends that there are three solutions for protecting birds from injuries that may make by using windows in buildings; however, the professor casts doubt on the reading points by presenting some reasons and examples.
First of all, the writer claims that it is better that utilizing one-way glass instead of usual glass for making buildings because the birds do not see through a window and seems it is a mirror, so they do not make attempts to fly toward this window; in contrast, the professor rejects this notion by stating that the birds do not know a mirror and in the mirror they see sky or tree. Therefore, they are encouraged to fly through window.
Moreover, contrary to the idea in the reading suggesting that a colorful window leaves an impact on birds to detect a window and people can use an opening in this building, the lecturer asserts that the birds presumes this opening is a hole, so they try to through it. If there is a small opening in a building, the birds cannot fly through it; however, the building looks dark for people.
In addition, even though the writer indicates that birds have a magnetic feature, so if human make a magnetic field, the birds can navigate in the correct direction and protect from hurts, the professor mentions that birds use this features for far distance and migration not short distance. Hence, birds use their eyes and light for flying in cities, so magnetic field is not a cost-effective way.
