In this set of materials, the reading passage states that some architectures use glass for the design of a building, but glass is harmful to wild birds because they cannot distinguish a glass and crash with it, so the reading provides 3 solutions for this problem. On the other hand, the listening section brings into question the reading points by providing different reasons (and examples).
First, the reading indicates that using one-way classes instead of regular glass can solve the problem because people can see out but birds cannot see inside and they prevent to fly through it, and they think that it is a solid barrier. In contrast, the lecturer opposes this view by mentioning that the one-way class reflect the pictures as a mirror. It reflects a picture of sky or trees, so, like regular glass, birds cannot distinguish this is a mirror, and they try to fly through it.
Second, the reading argues that people would use colorful lines or paint on the regular glass. In this situation, birds see the strips and they prevent to fly through the glass; conversely, what the professor believes is different. He points out that by colorful lines people can see out and the light comes into the building, but birds see these lines as a-holes, and they try to fly through it. Also, for preventing this happen, unpainted glasses become extremely small, and it prevents the light from going to the building, and the building becomes dark. So it is not practical solutions.
Finally, according to the reading, birds can use a magnetic field for finding their ways, so people can use a magnetic compass for building; hence, birds can find their ways by this. However, the lecturer believes that birds only use the magnetic field for finding ways in long distance. For example, when they want to migrate from a cold country to a warmer country, they use a magnetic field for finding ways. But for short distance, they use their eyes or brightness of a light. So, this solution cannot work in the cities.
