The lecturer believes that there are flaws in the three theories about the 52-hertz whale in the reading passage and that the existence of this unique whale still remains a mystery.
First, the speaker disagrees with the theory in the reading that states the high pitch whale may be a hybrid of two different whale species. He explains even though whales have an unusual migrant pattern, hybrid whales do follow the same pattern as other normal whales do. That being said, when scientists tried to locate the 52-hertz whale according to its sound, they discovered that it doesn't migrate along with its species. This suggests this unique individual is not an offspring of any whales' interbreeding.
Second, the lecturer explains the frequency of sound in whales, just like in human, depends on the physical structure of the throat. When a whale produces a song with unusually high frequency, it is the result of a very unusual throat structure and not due to poor hearing capacity or deafness. He states that there is no connection between the two structures, which refutes the second theory in the reading that says the 52-hertz whale may born deaf and thus cannot learn songs from other whales.
Third, the reading holds that the single whale may be the only discovered member of a very rare high-pitch species that has died out. However, the lecturer is doubtful that this is accurate. He suggests even if this 52-hertz whale belongs to a very rare species, it should have parents that produce sounds of the same frequency. Nevertheless, scientists have found little evidence of same high-pitched sounds in the ocean despite having used the technique for identifying whale songs for a very long time. Therefore, a species of 52-hertz whales may not exist.
In conclusion, the writer and the lecturer hold conflicting views about the explanation of the solitary whale.
