The reading passage offers three pieces of evidence to support the idea that humpback whales migrate for such a long distance by the stars. However, the lecturer holds an opposited side of the writer.
First, the reading passage claims that humpback whales are high intelligent animals which are able to use stars to navigate. However, the lecturer refutes this statement by pointing out that some birds such as ducks which are average intelligent also use stars to navigate. It seems like some animals are born to utilize stars to migrate. There is no obvious connection between powerful brain and using stars.
Secondly, the writer suggests that humpback whales rely on stars to offer external signals to maintain direction. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that it is not because of stars but the biological magnet. Therefore, humpback whales can feel the directions rather than observe the orientation of stars.
Last but not the least, the writer suggests that the spy-hopping behavior help humpback whales to see the stars. Nevertheless, the lecturers provides another animal, sharks, which using the spy-hopping behavior to hunt a prey. The connection between spy-hopping and looking at stars is very weak.
In conclusions, the lecturer disagrees with the idea that humpback whales are navigating by the stars.
