TPO1-Task1
This set of the material in both reading and lecture is about reduction in working days for employees. The passage mentions that if the companies by mandatory policy reduce their working days from five-days working to four-day week , it will be more suitable to both company and employees for a couple of reasons. On the other hand the lecturer holds an opposite view and he refute the passage claims by saying that it is not beneficial, because he look at this issue from different perspective.
First, although the reading expresses that shorter workweek can be economical, the lecturer opposes to this idea and states four day week working requires to more costs. The more the employee, the more office spaces and computers are required which all is by default leading to more expenditure. Also this condition will force the company administrators to pay more money in order to training new clerks.
Second, reading suggests that in this plan, for every four-day employee there will be a new employee that can be hired to do the job. The lecturer rejects this idea as well, saying that hiring new employees will cost more and there is no guarantee the amount of job opportunities increases as a result of more four-day week workers. Besides, the company expectation will be higher and they will expect the four-day week employee to the same amount of job as five-day employees.
Finally, the author emphasizes that this plan would be advantageous for employees, which enables them to allocate more times for their personal enjoyment. However, the speaker has different opinion, by saying that, shortening days of working time may lead to job instability, as a result, the employees will lose their job in this critical economic condition. Also, four-day working will harm the employee’s chance to become advanced in their job. Additionally, most of the companies may prefer five-day workers in order to consistence supervision and continuous coverage, so this kind of workers cannot achieve promotion in their job.
