traditional encyclopedias vs online ones
In the passage three main problems of online encyclopedias are represented. These three issues are correctness of online articles, vandalism and emphasizing on not really important topics. The professor criticizes these issues. She gives some reasons against the ideas in the lecture to show that online encyclopedias are better than traditional ones in some cases.
First and foremost, it should be notified that traditional encyclopedias are not one hundred percent correct. In fact errors can be found in them just like online ones. Even correcting errors in printed form encyclopedias is much harder and mistakes remain for a longer time but in online ones wrong information is replaced with accurate one immediately without forcing any extra expense or time.
Second, it is obvious that spoiling the information by vandalism is easier in online format but it seems that strict strategies against such actions have been neglected in the passage. These strategies include read only format for some crucial information which prevents ordinary authors from editing such information. The other strategy that can be mentioned is employing special editors who watch sensible information and decide about changes which had been made to them.
Third, as the space is limited in printed form of encyclopedias, resolving the problem of space dedicated to each entry seems to be hard but there is no such an issue in online format because in this case we have an endless space in which each topic can be negotiated vastly. In other words, diversity and including many kinds of information fields is the unique characteristics of online encyclopedias that should be taken into account.
