Essay topics:

In the United States, employees typically work five days a week for eight hours each day. However, many employees want to work a four-day week and are willing to accept less pay inorder to do so. A mandatory policy requiring companies to offer their employees the option of working a four-day workweekfor four-fifths (80 percent)of their normal pay would benefit the economy as a whole as well as the individual companies and the employees who decided to take the option. The shortened workweek would increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and as a result, they would make fewer costly errors in their work. Hiring morestaff to ensure that the same amount of work would be accomplished would not result in additional payroll costs because four-day employees would only be paid 80 percent of the normal rate. In the end, companies would have fewer overworked and error-prone employees for the same money, which would increase company profits. For the country as a whole, one of the primary benefits of offering this option to employees is that it would reduce unemployment rates. If many full-time employees started working fewer hours, some of their workload would have to be shifted to others. Thus, for every four employees who went on an 80 percent week, a new employee could be hired at the 80 percent rate. Finally, the option of a four-day workweek would be better for individual employees. Employees who could afford a lower salary in exchange for more free time could improve the quality of their lives by spending the extra time with their families, pursuing private interests, or enjoying leisure activities

In the passage, the author discusses three kinds of the benefits of working four-day instead of the five-day week. However, the lecturer claim that the what the reading passage states is not convincing and disputes those ideas presented in the reading passage by the several proof.

First, both the text and talk discusses the idea of economic benefit to the companies. In this regard, the belief in the reading passage is that offering four-day work week will be cause to the companies and the employees benefit who choose to work four-day. However, the lecturer refutes this view-point by saying that companies need to spend more than before because if they want to make the same amount of work they need to recruit more employees than before. Consequently, the companies need to pay for their training, medical costs and insurance. Besides, more employees means more office space and computer. which in the end will cut the companies' profits.

Second, both the reading and the listening material put forth the idea of the errors that was occurred during the jobs. In this vein, the writer make point that the workers are done fewer mistakes during their job,if they feel more relax and rested. Professor, on the other hand, says that because of the problems that mentioned in the first assertion, companies would rather not the employ more worker instead they may raise their expectation from the employees and may employees are supposed to do the same amount of the work in shorter time or in overtime working times.

Third, the author demonstrates that the employees who choose to work four-day will have more time to spend with their family and improve their life quality, while the speaker views to this issue id from an opposite angle. According to speaker, the employees would faced with less job stability and fewer promotion in their job situation or they maybe the first one how lose their job in economic down which will cause stress to their lifes'.
