Both the reading passage and lecture discusses about the usage of the buildings, often containing hundreds of rooms and three to four number of stories located at the settlements of Chaco Canyon. Whilst the author contends that the stone buildings were used for either residential or storage or ceremonial purpose based upon the respective evidences, the lecturer challenges the each argument mentioning several reasons which will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

The author, in the reading, begins by mentioning that the building must have been used as the residential one: architecture bestowed by the Chaco houses greatly resembled the apartment buildings containing hundreds of individual in each houses; however, the lecturer refutes the claim made by author stating that only outside structure resembled the apartment buildings and a major aspect of the residential building was missing from it: fireplaces used for cooking. Further, he mentions that only mark of the 10 fireplaces were found during the study and it was impossible to facilitate 100's of peoples with such limited number of fireplaces. Thus, it was never used for the residential purpose.

The writer further asserts that the buildings were employed for the storage of one the major crops of the time: maize, for storing particular crops for longer period of time. The speaker questions the position maintained by the writer positing that if it was used for the storing maize, then no any traces of maize-- spilled remains of maize and big containers used for its storage--were not observed during the study after excavation. Thus, the writer asserts that it was not used for such purpose.

Finally, the reading article argues that excavation of the mound resulting in the high number of pots in the building suggested the its ceremonial usage, where people tend to eat meals and deposit thereby during the festivals. As opposed to the author's opinion, the lecturer affirm that there were some additional findings that included the remains of large building materials such as sand. stone, and tools. Consequently, the broken pots may be leftovers after used by the construction workers which strongly opposes the claim of the author.

To summarize, the writer and speaker holds opposite views on the usage of the described buildings in Chaco Canyon settlement which will make difficult for both of them to find the common ground.
