The graph below shows the quantities of goods transported in the UK between 1974 and 2002 by four different modes of transport.
The line graph illustrates the total quantities of goods transport by using four different modes of transportation in the UK between 1974 and 2002. Horizontal axis demonstrates years and vertical axis shows per million tonnes per modes of transport per year.
Overall, the number of goods transport by road increased dramatically while the total of goods transport by rail decreased steadily. However, the number of goods transport by pipeline rose and stayed around 20 million tonnes and also by water transport which remain unchanged by around 60 million tonnes of goods.
As is shown by the graph, the quantities of good which carried by rail remain constant around 40 million tonnes then declined significantly and stayed around 10 million tonnes between 1978 and 2002. It can be seen from graph the usage of pipeline transport steadily increased from 5 million tonnes to just over 20 million tonnes over a 28 years. As well as, it was seen a significant increase on numbers of goods transport by road from just around 50 million tonnes to below 100 million tonnes in the same period.
In conclusion, although the usage of these three kinds of transportation changed markedly, however, we can see unsignificant differences on the number of goods carried by water transport. It rise from 40 million tonnes to well under 60 million tonnes and stayed approximately during 20 years period. Finally, it rise dramatically to just over 60 million tonnes on the same level.
