The passage states that many critics argue which ethanol, made from plants such as corn and sugar cane, is not a good replacement for gasoline and provides three reasons of disagreement. The lecturer, nevertheless, explains that ethanol is a good alternative and none of those reasons are convincing.
First, the reading claims that the global warming will not be solved by increasing the use of ethanol fuel since it releases carbon dioxide. Conversely, the lecturer opposes this point by saying that ethanol will not add global warming. According to the professor, even though it is true that ethanol releases carbon dioxide but corn can absorb carbon dioxide as nitrogen. So, this reason is not persuasive enough.
In addition, the article posits that production of ethanol would reduce the amount of plants availabe for uses other fuel. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that it dose not reduce the plants. The professor contends that ethanol made from a part of plant that is not eaten by animals and thus it has no effect on decreasing the amount of plants or animals.
Finally, the passage expresses that ethanol fuel will never be able to compete with gasoline on price. Quite on the contrary, the lecturer emphasizes that it will be able to compete by increasing the production that leads to huge drop on price. We also learn that if ethanol produce 3 times greater than now, the price will be droped by 4 percent and thus it can compete with gasoline on price.
