TPO-14 - Integrated Writing Task Every year, forest fires and severe stormscause a great deal of damage to forests in the northwestern United States. One way of dealing with the aftermath of these disasters is called salvage logging, which is the practice
The reading and the lecture are both about the pros and cons of salvage logging in the environment. The author believes that salvage logging is beneficial to forest and the economy. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented in the reading passage.
First of all, the author points out that if forest fire occurs, forest becomes congested with dead trees, thus, this should be removed in order to sustain the environment. The author mentions that Salvage logging removes the dead trees and help to grow new ones, hence help the forest to be alive again. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that salvaging forest may took a while to recover to its lush environment. Furthermore, he argues that it is not beneficial for the trees, hence, there are few nutrients available for growth with this process.
Secondly, the author contends that decaying wood is beneficial for insects habitat like spruce bark beetle, thus, when its population is enormous it can damage healthy spruce trees. The article notes that by removing rotted wood it can lessen insects infestation, hence, making the forest healthy. The lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that rotting wood does not contribute to the damage of the forest. Evidence reveals that Alaskan forest that is 100 years old has no damages and dead trees. He elaborates on this by mentioning that long term salvaging has more harm to the environment than infestation of the insects.
Finally, the author states that it has more economical benefit. The author implies savaging logging creates more job on the community and in local residents. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that the economy in salvaging forest is short lived. Moreover, He puts forth the idea that in order to transport lumber they will need special means of transporting it such as use of helicopter and ships. He also added that jobs are only temporary to workers and the employees must have experience and skills for the position, but employer opt to outsource their staff than get it locally.
