TPO 26- The zebra mussel, a freshwater shellfish native to Eastern Europe, has long been spreading out from its original habitats and has now reached parts of North America. There are reasons to believe that this invasion cannot be stopped and that it poses a serious threat to freshwater fish populations in all of North America.
The reading and lecture are both about the spreading of zebra mussel to Northern America. The author of the reading believes that it has negative impacts on freshwater fish population in all over North America. However, the lecturer casts doubts about the claims made in the article and refutes all the theories presented.
First of all, the author points out that the invasion of zebra mussel in ocean might be unstoppable. The article notes that human are the main cause of its rapid growth in the freshwater. The point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that people has no control on the rapid expansion in the growth of zebra mussel population in the past. Furthermore, he argues that they don't have the knowledge and effective way to control it from spreading. In addition, zebra mussel travel through ships in fresh ballast water and must be emptied in water full of zebra mussel next with ocean water, thus they found out that zebra mussel cannot adopt to salt water and their species rapidly decline by this method of transport.
Secondly, the author contends that zebra mussel can easily dominate a new habitat. The article establishes that they can survive harsh environment and can rapidly multiply. However, the lecturer rebuts this argument. He suggests that zebra mussel has no predator in the beginning. He elaborates on this by mentioning that birds found new food source and new habitat. As a result, zebra mussel population declined.
Finally, the author states zebra mussel are dominant species, so, other species in the area can have drop in numbers. The article denotes that they love to eat plankton and they compete with food sources with other species. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that they zebra mussel have no negative impact on fish and plankton. He puts forth the idea that zebra mussel diet consists of bottom feeding fish and it can even increase the number of plankton and other species of fishes in the fresh water.
