TPO49-Humpback whales
The lecture and the passage discuss whether hupback whales use stars to navigate or not. Although the passage claims that there are three hypotesises which indicate this animal navigate by the stars, the speaker refutes this idea through a number of reasons which will be described in this report.
First of all, the passage points out that humpback whales are sart enough to using the stars to navigate and they have well-developed abilitiy to utilize complex systems like night sly for their navigation. The speaker, incontrast, rejects this by claiming that there is not a real connection between intelligence and the using of the stars for navigation. He also states that there are some species like ducks which is using stars; however, they have average intelligence ability; So, they have just barned with this ability.
Furthermore, unlike the passage which states that since the humpback whales can retain their movements in a straight rout, they exploit some external objects or forces to navigate, the speaker argues that they might orient by some external objects or forces, even though the forces could be magnetic fields. He also adds that animals have general bio magnetide; thus, this species could use this magnetide in their brains to navigate their routes.
Finally, although the passage says that these whales have some unsual behavior like spy-hopping which demonstrates that they look upward to find the stars, the speaker disagrees by mentioning that spy-hopping is a rare behavior among anials; however, sharks use this behavior to look animals they want to hunt and in that time it might not no stars in the sky to be seen by this animal. Moreover, the sharks do not migrate; therefore, this hypothesis is a pure speculation.
