The pie chart presents the proportion of land which was degraded by four principal reasons around the world and the table provides information about percentage of land degradation by the causes in three continents during the 1990s.
Overall, over-grazing and deforestation were main causes for the land degradation whereas europe reported greatest proportions of land degraded of the three regions.
Closer examination, over-grazing recoded the highest figure of land turned uncultivated, 35%, followed by deforestation, accounting for 30%. Over-cultivation was another chief reason of land that became hardly arable (28%). The other unnamed reasons occupied little areas, less than 10%.
europe had 23% uncultivated land and deforestation was the most essential reason, reporting 9.8%. Besides, over-cultivation and overgrazing also occupied the great proportion, 7.7% and 5.5% respectively. North America recoded the smallest percentage of uncultivated land and both accounted for lower than 8%. It is worth noting over-grazing along accounted for 11.3% degraded land in the Oceania area.
