The reading presents some possible reasons for the extinction of Steller's sea cow, a clossol marine animal discovered by Steller, an European naturalist. The professor, however, challenges all the claims made in the article and refutes them.
First, the author states that the overhunting by native Siberian people attributes to the animal extinction. The lecturer, in contrast, disagrees with this statement in two point. First, each of the sea cows were nine meter long and weighs ten tones, so people could have one sea cow for a long time as a source of food. Second, the population of that area weren't too large to hunt many animals.
Furthermore, the writer suggests that due to the decrease of the population of Kelp, the ecosystem is the reason for extinction of sea cows. On the other hand, the speaker contends that if a severe situation had happened to Kelp, there should have been a decline in other marine animals' population too. Nevertheless there is nothing reported regarding to this.
Finally, the author asserts that European fur traders is the main cause of this extinction. Conversely, the lecturer argues that there was decline in the sea cows population hundereds of years preceding European arrival, because the shortage of sea cows is reported by traders who have observed it during fishing.
