The chart below gives information about the age of women in Australia when they give birth to their first child in 1966, 1986 and 2006.
The given chart compares the percentage of women who give birth to their first child in Australia in terms of age in three years, 1966, 1986 and 2006.
It is clear that the figures of group aged 30- to 34-year-old and over 35 was witnessed a considerable increase during this period, while the opposite was true for groups aged 20- to 24-year-old and under 19. In addition, the percentage of people over 40 is the lowest.
As can be seen from the chart that in spite of occupying a highest proportion at 60% in 1966, the cohort between the age of 20 and 24 significantly decreased to a half in 2006. The percentage of group aged under 19 experienced the same pattern, with a drop by 15%.
Looking at the chart in more detail, notwithstanding the fact that the number of people aged over 30 was witnessed a soar in 2006, the percentage of women who give birth to their first child aged over 40 was lowest at 5%. On the other side, the proportion of group aged 25- to 29-year-old rose to 50% in 1986, followed by a decrease of 10% in 2006.
