The table shows the three types of data (date opened, kilometers per route and millions of passengers per year) about metro systems in London, Paris, Tokyo, Washington DC, Kyoto and Los Angeles.
Overall, the oldest underground railway belongs to London and Paris with both of them having also the longest route systems. Kyoto and Los Angeles have the youngest and shortest metro systems with the least number of passengers per year. Furthermore, the most used metro belongs to Tokyo.
With regard to the age of the underground railway systems, the two oldest were established in 1863 and 1900 in London and Paris, respectively. On the other hand, Kyoto and Los Angeles railway systems were built almost 100 years later in 1981 and 2001, making them the youngest metro systems.
The longest metro system belongs to the city of London with almost 400 kilometers of railway with Paris and Tokyo having less than half of the length (199 and 155 kilometers). The shortest railway system is only 11 kilometers long and located in Kyoto.
Tokyo’s metro is the most used one with 1927 million passengers each year whereas Washington DC, Kyoto and Los Angeles are the least used underground railway systems with 144, 45 and 50 million passengers per year individually.
