The line graph gives information about changes in the emissions of carbon dioxide per person in four different countries during the period from 1967 to 2007.
Overall, there were general downward trends in the average amount of carbon dioxide in Italy and Portugal, whereas the United Kingdom and Sweden experienced a reverse pattern. It is also clear that the emission in Sweden showed the most dramatic change compared to the other countries.
Around 10.5 metric tonnes of CO2 was emitted in the United Kingdom in 1967, followed by about 8.5 metric tonnes in Sweden. Afterward, the amount of CO2 in the UK decreased constantly to roughly 8.6 metric tonnes in 2007. Over the same period, the figure for Sweden rose suddenly to reach its peak of just over 10 metric tonnes in 1977 before falling steeply to 5.5 metric tonnes in the following four decades.
In comparison, there were about 4 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide released in Italy, which was nearly twice as high as that of Portugal in the first year. After going up noticeably to approximately 8 metric tonnes, the emission of CO2 in Italy remained constant until ten years later, whereas the other country saw a continuous rise in its figure, to roughly 5.5 metric tonnes which is equal to that of Sweden.
