This table depicts the changes in the number of employees (male and female) and factories, from 1851 to 1901, in England and Wales.
Overall, it is evident from the table that there is a massive drop in the number of employees working, both male and female, while there is a sporadic trend in the factory count, from 1851 to 1901.
It can be seen from the table that except in the year 1861, in all the years the number of males working was higher when compared to the female employees. However, working women(160000) outnumbered working men(131780) in the year 1861 taking the overall count of employees to 291780. The highest number of males and females ever to work were 287100 and 190000 respectively, in 1851 and the lowest being 31000 and 30000 respectively in 1901.
The difference between the count of men and women employed kept decreasing constantly with 97100 in 1851, which reduced to just 1000 in 1901.
The number of factories saw a substantial increase in the period 1861-1881 reaching its apex value of 721 in 1881 from 227 factories in 1861. However, it dropped a little bit and finally settled at 600 factories in 1901.
