The main factors contributing to less productive land in the 1990s are illustrated on the pie chart. While the causes of land degradation in three regions in the similar years are reported on the table. Overall, it is evidence that over-grazing and deforestation were two main contributors to worldwide land degradation. Furthermore, the largest degraded land was reported in Europe.
To begin with, more than one-third of land degradation in the world was led by over-grazing of livestock, followed by deforestation and over-cultivated land at 30% and 28% respectively.
Moving to the table, as many as 23% of land in Europe was in a degraded state, and two main reasons of which were deforestation (9,8%) and fast-farming activities (7,7%). In Oceania, 13% of the land was reported less productive with over-grazing (11,3%) as the leading factor contributing to this problem. However, in this region, there was no degraded land related to over-used agricultural land. In addition, the lowest percentage of degraded land was showed in North America with over-cultivation responsible for the highest figure (3,3%), and over-grazing and deforestation at 1,5% and 0,2% each.
