The reading and lecture are both about the decision making behavior that can be observed in teen aged people and adult one. The author and lecturer states that teenager are susceptible to make rash decisions owing to the various factors such as differences in brain function and it's causes are mentioned below.
First, the author of the reading states that they are rather influenced by amaeteur behavior than that of their logic and reasoning. For instance, undeveloped caliber includes delayed gratification, emotion regulation and so on. The lecturer further elaborates this by mentioning that these activities are less likely to be appeared in adult since they are matured enough to make wise decision.
Secondly, according to the writing teenagers are competent decision makers and are impacted by psycho-social factors. In addition, they are highly affected by their peer pressure which compelled them to take risky decision. The speaker corroborates this by pointing out that adults do not show such traits of influencing by their companions. Furthermore, they are less likely to pushed in pressing situation by peers.
Finally, the reading passage also notes that risk taking behaviour results as a interaction of socio-emotional and cognitive control network. In addition, socio-emotional network tend to change frequently than cognitive control due to which teenager challenges to regulate risk prone socio-emotional network as they play an imperative role in brain processing emotional and social stimuli for reward processing. The speaker goes on to say that these network are not well developed in teenagers as compared to young adults. Thus, there is a high state of arousal for reward in teenager which subsequently make them viable to approach risk taking decision.
As we can see, the author and lecturer holds similar views on risk taking behavior in adult and adolescent. The speaker effectively illustrates the writer's ideas.
