The bar chart describes the trends in housing, particularly the changes in the percentage of families owning and renting accommodation over the period of 93 years from 1918 to 2011.
The graph representing data in percentage terms offers a breakdown of house rental and ownership dynamics observed from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, the share of households owning accommodation was in an increasing trend until 2001, and we can notice a negative correlation with the percentage change of renting ones. A skew in favour of homes rental ceased to exist in 1971, when the distribution was equal, and reversed from 1981 onwards. Having reached a plateau in 2001, both indicators edged in the opposite direction, breaking the previous pattern.
As we can see from the owned accommodation dataset, it has been gradually rising by approximately 10 percentage points per year, with the exception of 1953, 2001 and 2011. While in 1953 and 2001 the number stayed unchanged, 2011 is the only year when it marginally dropped. Nevertheless, an impressive performance is evident by the steady edge higher from 20% in 1918 to above 60% by the end of the observation period.
The weight of households in rented homes was in a downward trend throughout the term, dropping from almost 80% to slightly below 40%. However, there were not any rapid dips, just gradual steps of up to ten percentage points per annum. The only exception was in 2011 when the number popped up higher by about five ticks.
