The chart below gives information about how famlilies in one country spent their weekly income in 1968 and 2018. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparision where relevant.
The provided bar chart illustrates the percentages of average expenditure per week in a particular country during the years 1968 and 2018.
Looking from an overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the significantly reduced expanse for food and the substantially high spending for housing, leisure and transport after 5 decades indicate that the preference for these things had overtaken food as the largest area of expenditure. Among the other categories, there was decline in the proportion of income spent on fuel and power, clothing and footware, as well as personal goods, while household goods remained relatively stable.
In 1968, precisely 35% of total expenses were dedicated to food, representing over a third of all expenditure combined. In contrast, each of the other categories, such as fuel and power, household goods, personal goods, transport, represented at a mere 6% to 8% of the budget. In addition, the money spent on housing, clothing and leisure accounted for approximately 10% each.
Fast forward to 2018, a remarkable shift in spending patterns was observed. Families tripled their earnings for leisure, reaching around 23% making it the highest category. Movever, larger propotion of their weekly income was allocated to housing, which experienced an overall rise by 9%, and transport, which displayed a 13% increased. Futhermore, clothing and footware, fuel and power, personal goods experienced a lower spending share in 2018 compared with 1968, at around 5%, while household goods showing no change over the 50-year span. However, there was a downward trend in the percentage of money used for food, dropped by half to approximately 17%.
