Marco polo
The passage speaks about wether or not Marco Polo was true in his writings about his visit to China. The reading passage states that there are many critics that suggest, due to three reasons that Marco Polo never actually visited China as he has mentioned in his writings. The lecturer on the other hand disagrees with this assertion and presents reasons to explain why the claims made by the critics do not hold water.
To begin, the reading passage says that Marco Polo’s close relationship with Kubai Khan as mentioned by him is unlikely to be true because according to the book Polo had been appointed a governor in Khan’s government for three years but it is unlikely for a foreigner to have been awarded with this post. Apart from that, no mention of Marco Polo can be found in the Chinese historical texts from the era. However, the lecturer explains that because Polo wrote his works almost 20 years after his visit, some inconsistencies are to be expected. As a result, a mistake was made and Polo was not a governor but merely an ambassador in Khan’s governmet. Considering how trivial and unimportant the post is, it is obvious that his name would not be mentioned in the historical texts.
Secondly, critics speculate the absence of a mention of The Great Wall of China from the works of Polo. Considering how astonishing the wall is, especially for a European visitor, it is highly unlikely for Polo to have not mentioned it if he had visited China. The lecturer however argues that The Great Wall was built to prevent the Mongol invasion and considering the fact that Polo visited China after the Mongol invasion, under their rule, the wall would have been in an insignificant state at the time and not worthy enough of a mention.
Lastly, Frances Wood’s book Did Marco Polo Go to China presents claims that Polo did not actually visit but instead based his writings on many texts about Asia found in local libraries in Iran and Turkey. She claims this based on a number of reasons. The lecturer on the other hand mentions that Frances herself received as much criticism for her book as Polo’s original writings. And apart from that, many churches that had only been mentioned by Polo in his accounts of China have been recently discovered by archeologists, hence reinforcing the fact that Polo did infact visit China.
As it is clear, the lecturer strongly disagrees and presents enough evidence against the criticism received by Polo’s works.
