The graphs below show the enrolments of overseas students and local students in Australian universities over a ten year period.
The line graph illustrates application from foreign and local students to Australian universities in ten-year period.
Overall, number of enrolments of local students was much higher than the overseas students. However, commencing rates for both types of students was lower than total number of enrolments.
In the graph, it can be seen that in 2001, 20000 foreign students applied to Australian universities. In contrast, commencing rates was slightly lower than the total number of applications at around 17000. At the end of the period, even though both sections experienced dramatic increases gap between number of total and commencing enrolments is expanded significantly. (80000 total, 40000 commencing)
When it comes to the local students, commencing rates were always lower than the total number of enrolments and remained stable at around 200000 enrolments with some fluctuations. However, total number of applications were at 400000 in 2001 but it increased rapidly until levelled off at 600000 enrolments in 2007 then it remained the same over the period.
