In the United States employees have the option of work to four days per week.
The reading and the lecture both are about the employees in the United States have the option of working a four-day work per week for four-fifths of normal pay. The author of reading believes that this will be beneficial for the economy of the country, employee and the companies. The lecturer casts doubt on the points made in the reading passage. He says that four-day work will not beneficial for anyone.
First of all, the author says that the shortened week would increase company profits because there will be error-prone employees since they would feel relax and alert. The company will do a profit due to paying only fourth-fifths of payroll than normal and accomplish the same amount of work. The lecturer refutes this point and asserts that the company has to spend lots of money to give training to more numbers of employees and for their medical treatment. Additionally, they have to increase office space and the number of computers. So, eventually, the company has to pay the same as it pays for the five-hour employee.
Secondly, the author states that unemployment in the country will cut because more numbers of people can do the job. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He states that if the number of people hired, then they will expect to do overtime work. They will be asked to do work as employees of five days will do. So, ultimately, the number of employees will be reduced.
Finally, the author mentions that this option would be beneficial for employees are satisfied with the normal salary because they can spend their extra time with their families. The lecturer, on the other hand, states that by spending less time in office, their workability will decrease, so there are chances that they lose their job. Furthermore, they will less prone to get the job than employees from the option of five-hour work.
