The graph below shows the consumption of fish and some different kinds of meat in a European country between 1979 and 2004.
The line chart compares the quantity of four kinds of food eaten by one person in a week over a period of 25 years.
It is noticeable that meat consumption saw considerable changes over the period shown. Fish consumption, however, remained relatively stable.
In 1979, beef was the most popular food, with approximately 220 grams every week. Lamb consumption was slightly more than that of chicken but after one year they reached the same point. The consumption of fish was the least, only 60 grams eaten by one person per week.
Between 1979 and 2004, the amount of chicken consumed rose dramatically to about 250 grams in 2004, overtaking beef as the biggest one. By contrast, the figure for lamb fell greatly by 90 grams. Beef saw a small rise to 240 grams after 1980 and then declined to 100 grams. In 1989, beef and chicken were consumed equally. Fish remained relatively stable, at between 40 and 60 grams.
