The table below describes the number of employees and factories in England and Wales from 1851 to 1901.
The table illustrates how many employees (males and females) and factories in two countries (England and Wales) over the period between 1851 and 1901.
Overall, it is clear that the total number of employees decreased significantly over the mentioned period although the number of factories rose. Moreover, the number of male employees was larger than that of females in almost all years, except in 1861.
Starting with 1851, numbers of male and female employees were the largest at 287,100 and 190,000 respectively. In 1861, the number of male workers declined by more than 50% to reach only 131,780, while that of females went down by only 30,000. In the next year, female workers number showed a great decline by 100,000, while the figure of males continued to decrease to reach 80, 123. Both numbers continued to decrease to reach similar numbers at the end of the period.
Turning to the number of factories, it started by 225 in 1851. The number was similar to that the next year; however, in 1871 this number almost tripled to reach 622 factories. In 1881, there was the largest number of factories (721 factories); however, the figure went down slightly the next two years.
