1. People should follow the customs and traditions when people start to live in a new country. To what extent do you agree and disagree?
Nowadays, the rapid advance of transportation has render transitional travel common, which gives rise to expatriation. However, this trend also raises the question of whether expatriates should comply with their new countries' ways of life. Personally, I strongly agree with this particular view for certain reasons.
Firstly, contemporary students have better educational opportunities as they are offered many scholarships from different continents. However, if students are insufficiently adaptable, studying aboard could be a challenging experience. Indeed, drastic changes related to studying environments and teaching methods pose difficulties to students’ performances. In particular, the Western university’s culture which encourages individualism may create many hardships for Asian students whose school systems place a heavy emphasis on hierarchies.
Secondly, the increasingly interconnected world has generated an abundant amount of oversea employment. Although working aboard is deemed as a promising choice as it offers not only great incomes but also increased cultural sensitivity, However, if adaptation is not carried out correctly, international workers would face alienation. Specifically, foreigner workers with insufficient language skills are prone to misinterpretation leading to disagreements between colleagues in workplaces and so their social network shrinks.
With this in mind, instead of stubbornly trying to adhere to the original beliefs, expatriates should reconcile their behaviours with the native way of life. In order word, newcomers can strengthen the bond between themselves and the new culture through various daily occasions. Specifically, national festivities not only give stress relief but also are great educational moments for visitors to widen their local knowledge. Likewise, conversations with locals are a great tool that not only breaks language barriers but also helps expatriates gain trust from locals.
In conclusion, adaptation to a new culture facilitates a person’s academic and work achievements.
