According to the presented materials both the article and the lecture discuss colonizing people in asteroids which are rocky and icy giant objects in space is the best option compared to both moon and adjacent planets. The author is of the opinion that low gravity, mining valuable metals, and easy to rich are reasons for that. However, the lecture finds this thesis flawed and proceeds to present a number of arguments in its rejection.
To being with, it is stated that the asteroids is so smaller than moon or planets. The craft need less fuel to carry, because of lower gravity in asteroids. On the contrary, the lecture asserts that the density of the bones and muscles of the people who live on asteroid become lesser. In fact, the less gravity effects on the muscles and bones of these people, and cause them less dense.
Second, the author claims that valuable elements can be found in some of the asteroids. For instance gold and platinum. these materials cost is much higher than the cost to go to the asteroids. Yet again, lecture clarifies the point that cost of transporting metals is considerable, so it’s profit wont very much, and also the price of these materials wont remain as same as now cost. In fact probably the cost of these materials become less after mining a large quantity of them.
The last point on which the lecture odds with each other is that the author believes that the asteroids can be reached easier than moon or planets, because they come near the earth's orbit. these asteroids are reachable by two years tripe. that being said that, the lecturer affirms that getting back from asteroids is much harder than moon or Mars. The asteroid comes near the earth, but then go away. Therefore, comeback to earth is much more difficult.
