The charts below give the information about USA marriage and divorce rates between 1970 and 2000, and the marital status of adult Americans in two of the years.
The first chart indicates figure for the quantity of marriages and divorces in America the period between 1970 and 2000 while the second one portrays the proportion of mature people in the United States in sectors of never married, married, widowed and divorces in 1970 and 2000. Overall, there was a steady reduction in the marriage rate while the number of divorces fluctuated in a span of 30 years. In terms of the second chart, the quantity of married people gained the highest percentage in comparison with other sectors in both 1970 and 2000.
It is clear from the first chart that the number of marriages remained the same of 2.5 millions in 1970 and 1980. However, there was a slight decrease of marriage rate to 2.25 millions in 1990 and 2 millions in 2000. In the contrast, the quantity of divorces climbed up from 1 million to 1.4 millions in the period between 1970 and 1980. After that period, this number reduced to 1.1 millions in 1990 and 1 million in 2000.
As it can be seen from the second chart that the percentage of the married took up the first place as compared with the rest sectors in both 1970 and 2000 with 70% and about 60% respectively. Similarly, never married stood at the second place with 15% in 1970 and 20% in 2000. It is apparent that the proportion of widowed decreased significantly from 8% to 2% in comparison between 1970 and 2000 while the divorces had the upward trend between 1970 and 2000, 5% and 9% respectively.
