TPO 31
The reading and lecture are about whether Sinosauropteryx had feather or not. Points of critic mentioned in the reading states that the dinosaur unlikely had feather. The lecturer is opinion of these explanations are not compelling.
Firstly, the author posits that the pattern of lines was produced after the dinosaur died rather than when it was alive. Additionally, it is remarked that its skin was decomposed and altered into fibers. The lecturer challenged this idea by claiming that fossils of other species found from the same site have not been decomposed and was maintained attractively. For this reason, the idea that lines were caused by decaying process may be faulty.
Secondly, according to the reading, many dinosaurs had frills which grows from the body and the lines probably caused by frills. Nonetheless, the lecturer states that there are chemical differences between frills and feathers. She claims that the certain substance found from the fossils is solid evidence that the species had not frills due to absence of the substance in frills.
Finally, the author mentions that feather is utilized for flying or saving body heat and position of feather would not be employed for this purpose because it was on the backbone and tail. The lecturer, however, says that some certain animals use the feather to fascinate the mate rather than flying or insulating itself from cold temperature. Moreover, evidence proved that the lines were orange and white, which explains the feathers were utilized for displaying purpose.
