There is no doubt that world environment is going through a lot of crisis. Although some people believe that global warming is mainly responsible for environmental problems, others think that deforestation is the main culprit. In my opinion, since deforestation gives rise to global warming, it has more contribution in disrupting the ecological balance.
On the one hand, global warming is causing a devastating effect on the environment. This is because factories and vehicles burn fossil fuels in order to operate, which result in emission of toxic green-house gases that harm the environment. In other words, these hazardous gases deplete the ozone layer that protects the earth’s atmosphere from harmful radiation. Needless to say, these pernicious radiations cause not only disease to humans but also increase the temperature of the planet. That’s why, the glacier in the polar region is starting to melt, which, in turn, will lead to submergence or disappearance of continents. However, the amount of these detrimental gases is kept in check by trees because they usually absorb these gases. Therefore, it is quite evident that deforestation breeds global warming.
On the other hand, some people think that deforestation is the main pressing problem that needs to be addressed first and I completely agree with that. This is because trees keep human and wildlife alive by releasing oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide, the latter of which is mainly responsible for global warming. Indiscriminate cutting down of trees lead to accumulation of gases that initiates the vicious cycle of environmental degradation. For instance, a recent article in Times magazine reported that 30% of the wildlife is going to be extinct in the next fifty years due to reckless chopping down of trees. Moreover, deforestation makes the land barren because of which scarcity of food has already started to prevail in both developed and developing nation. Thus, deforestation is aggravating the existing poverty and unemployment.
To conclude, while people may vary in their opinion, I think that deforestation is destroying the environment more than any other thing, as well as contributing to the emergence of global warning and other issues.
