The line graph illustrates the number of households owning or renting accommodation in England and Wales in the period of 1918 to 2011. All data is calibrated in percentage.
Overall, it is observed that more households rented accommodation in the past before 1971. However, more decided to purchase their own property in the later decades.
From the graph, a downward trend can be seen in rented accommodation with a drastic drop from over 75% in 1918 to just above 30% in 2001. On the other hand, after a break-even in 1971, an opposite scenario is observed in owned accommodation as it rose steeply from an original of 22% and peaked at almost 70% in 2001, which was more than double of that of rented property.
Still, there was a slight decline of about 5% in owned accommodation in the following decade, contrasted by a similar percentage increase of rented property, indicating that more people preferred renting than owning a property in recent years.
