The bar chart below shows the total number of minutes (in billions) of telephone calls in Australia, divided into three categories, from 2001- 2008. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
The given bar chart is a pictorial illustration of the number of minutes of telephone calls in Australia, which have been made to various devices and localities from the years 2001 to 2008.
Based on the data sampled over the span of eight long years, an exponential rise is observed in the use of mobile phones. In the beginning of the 21st century, an approximate 2 billion minutes worth of calls were made from these wireless and handheld devices. By the end of the decade in 2008, the number had increased to 46 billion minutes, 20 times higher than its preceding estimate.
Similarly, a steady surge in minutes have also been recorded by national and international phone calls. However, they exhibit a higher proportion of call time compared to that of the mobile phones and maintained an even expansion throughout the decade.
The majority of the minutes are represented by the local telephones of the country. From 2001 to 2005, these local minutes follow the same trend as its accompanying categories on the chart. An exponential increase is yet again observed, rising from 72 billion minutes to 90 billion. Unfortunately, due to the growing popularity of mobile phones, the number of local minutes began to plunge after 2005 and continued to do so till 2008. As a consequence, the net number of minutes from local telephone calls showed no improvement.
