Overall, there are a growing number of people living alone in all ages, from 17 years old to 64 years old. Another striking feature is that, the most living alone group is the oldest age group the number of people older than 55 live alone at the highest rate across all years surveyed.
In detail, starting at around 3% in 1850, the percentage of people aged 55-64 rose steadily to a low of 4% in 1950 before surging to 17% in 2000. In a similar pattern, though begun at the same point at a high of 2% in 1850, the figures for 37-46-year-olds and 47-54-year-olds increased marginally to approximately 3% and a low of 4% in 1950 respectively. After 5 years, the percentage of those from 47 to 54 years of age witnessed a fourfold rise to roughly 13% while that of people aged 37-46 doubled to 7%.
In regard to people aged 27 to 36, its proportion only appeared in 1900, at around 2% then rocketed to 8% in the end of the period. Similarly, the figure for people aged 17-36 joined the data in 1950, at a low of 2%, the lowest rate compared to other age groups. After 5 years, it increased by a half to a high of 4%.
