Turtle Excluder Device uses in combating the threats to endangered sea turtles
According to the reading and lecture, commercial shrimp-fishing boats are menacing to the already endangered sea turtle species, and the use of turtle excluder device has been considered useful and efficient by some researchers. The article provides three theories to disprove the effectiveness of the turtle excluder device. However, the lecturer states three studies claiming the method is efficient, counteracting the theories of the author. Her position is that they the theories do not hold water.
Firstly, the author of the article emphasize that the use of this device would cost the shrimpers some catch. The author notes that the device turtle passage made it easy for some of the shrimp to escape. this specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that there are about thousands of shrimp boats operating, altogether catching thousands of turtles. She additionally points out that the shrimp population should be compared to the turtle population and not just relying on individual size.
Furthermore, the author points out that there are more efficient methods. She propounds the shortening of time limit that shrimp boats are allowed to strike their nets underwater, as this method would allow the turtles that has been caught to breath in air and also allow their release. The lecturer, however, disputes this notion. She contends that it is not practical enough, as this time limit would be impossible to enact. it is not easy to monitor thousands of boats but the TED device can be easily checked, says the lecturer.
Finally, the authors posit that the device doesn't give an efficient result for larger species such as loggerhead and leatherback. Further stating that they are quite big to escape through the established escape opening. The lecturer asserts that, although the openings are quite small, a larger opening can be made in the device for areas where this type would be utilized. Consequently, solving the problem of inefficiency of the larger species passage.
