Essay topics:

Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific solutions presented in the reading passage.

The reading and lecture are both about the evergreen tree called Torreya taxifolia which are in the condition of extinction. The author the reading proposed mainly three solution for the preservation of Torreya species however the lecturer disagrees. The speaker opposes the idea and attacks each of the claim made in the article.
Firstly, the author begins by stating that in order to conserve Torreya trees they need to reestablished in the same location where they used to flourish before that is in microclimate which is normally wetter and cooler.. The professor believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contend that due to the global warming, weather has become warmer so growing plant in such dry place strongly affect the plantation.
Secondly, according to the reading another way to protect Torreya is to shift them to diverse loaction far from the northern Florida. This way the seed can be successfully planted. The speaker on other hand points out the example of another plant which once moved to the different area replaced the exixting species . Therefore, this might be the case in moving Torreya plant to different area.
Finally, the reading passage also notes that preserving plant in research center can be the best solution. In addition, this allow scientist to inspect and monitor the plant closely for the continuation of plant survival. The professor rebuts this argument. He puts forth the idea that enough space is required for the survival of Torreya which is not possible in research center. Similarly, plant cannot resist disease within small space. Thus, this idea doesnot seem to be worthy.
As we can see, the author and professor holds very conflicting views on the ways to conserve Torreya taxifolia tree. The speaker effectively challenges the points made in the article.
