The chart below shows the number of trips made by children in one country in 1990 and 2010 to travel to and from school using different modes of transport.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The chart given compares a nation in terms of the quantity of trips made by pupils to commute to and from schools by utilising distinct types of transport over a period of 20 years from 1990 to 2010.
It is noticeable from the chart that using cars and walking were the most widely-preferred ways to go to and from schools among students. Additionally, a downward trend was recorded in all categories except for the figure of car passenger.
In 1990, there were over 12 million walking trips made by pupils, which overtook the number of bus trips by a wide margin, at nearly 7 million. Likewise, the quantity of cycling and walking and bus shared a comparable figure, at approximately 6 million, compared to nearly 4 million car trips made by pupils.
In 2010, students became indulged in utilising cars to commute to and from schools with over 11 million trips, whereas the number of walking ones plummeted to exactly 6 million. Meanwhile, the figure for walking and bus matched with a roughly similar trend to about 3 million. At the same time, the quantity of bus trips underwent an insignificant drop to around 5 million, at which point it outnumbered that of cycling ones by two to one, at 2 million.
