In 1990, there were over 12 million walking trips made by pupils, which overtook the number of bus trips by a wide margin, at nearly 7 million. Likewise, the quantity of cycling and walking and bus shared a comparable figure, at approximately 6 million, compared to nearly 4 million car trips made by pupils.
In 2010, students became indulged in utilising cars to commute to and from schools with over 11 million trips, whereas the number of walking ones plummeted to exactly 6 million. Meanwhile, the figure for walking and bus matched with a roughly similar trend to about 3 million. At the same time, the quantity of bus trips underwent an insignificant drop to around 5 million, at which point it outnumbered that of cycling ones by two to one, at 2 million.
