The diagram shows the design of a modern landfill for household waste.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The given diagram illustrates the layout of modern landfill for domestic waste decomposition.
Overall, the construction of the landfill is buried underground with two layers. It is also noticeable that there are two types of waste, and the gas one is transferred back to the household.
About the construction, it is a big hole dug into the ground. Under the hole lies a layer of natural rock to prevent leakage. The main part is the waste tank of a synthetic material which is surrounded by a clay layer to isolate the soil around. A system of pipes connecting to the house is installed, and a drainage tank also laid out.
As regards the use, solid waste is thrown into the tank, and the liquid one held in the drainage tank and discharged with the pipe system. In terms of the closure for the decomposition process, the landfill is sealed with a blanket of clay, allowing the solid waste to decay naturally and become a mud-like substance. In addition, the biogas generated from the process is driven back to the residence for various purposes.
